Moxa Therapy: Warming Pathways to Wellness
Moxa therapy is a heat therapy in which acupuncture points are stimulated with a heat source held close to the skin surface. During the treatment, herbs are burned over the acupuncture points. As a result, the points “open up” and the heat diffuses into the tissues.
Commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and Tibetan medicine, and often combined with acupuncture , it is a great way to improve blood circulation and the immune system.
When it comes to traditional Chinese medicine, everyone usually thinks of acupuncture . Many people think of needles first and are not even familiar with moxa therapy. Moxibustion is a treatment method that stimulates acupuncture points on the human body by heating moxa sticks or moxa eyes (in the case of sticks, held 2-3 centimeters from the skin).
Moxa therapy is used to warm the meridians and blood vessels, and it can achieve a uterine warming effect in the area around the navel, and it also helps to remove excess water from the body. Its most common ingredient is Artemisia argyi (a type of wormwood), a pure yang herb that can dispel cold air, an important medicine for stopping bleeding, and a commonly used medicine in traditional Chinese medicine and gynecology. When entering the human body, moxa heat circulates with qi and blood, and when it finds water, it automatically removes dampness. That is, when it encounters dampness and cold in a certain part of the human body, it slowly forces out dampness and cold.
Dry cupping can also be combined with massage, known as massage cupping or running cupping. In this technique, the therapist applies oil or lotion to the skin and gently glides silicone cups across the surface in circular or linear motions. This technique enhances circulation, loosens tight muscles, and creates a massage-like sensation.
The goal of dry cupping is to increase blood flow to the targeted area while encouraging the movement of fluids and the removal of toxins. These fluids are believed to contain substances related to inflammation and disease.
